Purpose and Background of IIIAE’s Establishment

The International Acoustic Emission organization concept (Figure 1) was proposed by Prof. Tomoki Shiotani (Kyoto University) at the 19th International Acoustic Emission Symposium (IAES19) held in Kyoto, Japan in 2008. Based on above concept, a proposal on establishment of an international organization that brings together academic societies related to AE and to hold regular unified conferences as a forum for disseminating to the world the results of research and projects related to AE that had been conducted by various regional institutions and individuals at the AEWG (Acoustic Emission Working Group) meeting held in Denver, USA in 2011.

In response to this proposal, Mr. Hartmut Vallen (Chair of European Working Group on Acoustic Emission, EWGAE), Prof. Tomoki Shiotani (Chair of Acoustic Emission Working Group, AEWG, USA) and Prof. Shuichi Wakayama (Chair of Japanese Committee on Acoustic Emission in the Japanese Society of Non-Destructive Inspection, JCAE) began preparations for a world conference to be held in a few years’ time.

Prof. Shiotani confirmed the intentions of the JCAE executives in JSNDI, he formulated a draft outline for a global organization, the International Association on Acoustic Emission (IAAE, later renamed IIIAE) with the cooperation of the AEWG executives. Based on this draft, a concrete strategy was then formulated for the early realization of an organization consisting of the EWGAE, the AEWG, and the JCAE in the JSNDI, as well as action goals for the official recognition of each organization (Figure 2).

The first proposal for admission to the society was presented and discussed in May 2012 at the 54th meeting of the AEWG (Princeton, NJ).
Finally, the admission was approved at the EWGAE conference in Granada, Spain in September 2012 (Figure 5), the 55th AEWG conference in Anaheim, USA in 2013 (Figure 6), and at the JSNDI board meeting in early 2015, and the IIIAE (International Institute of Innovative Acoustic Emission, consisting of three academic societies and organizations from developed countries; Figure 7) was established.
